Key Points

  • Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more popular
  • EVs are designed to be more cost-efficient than gasoline-powered cars.
  • EVs produce no direct greenhouse gas emissions contributing to pollution and climate change.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming more and more popular. If there were 48 EV models available in 2020, their numbers are likely to exceed 130 in 2024. The historic climate legislation of 2022, called the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), will further encourage the sale of EVs in the U.S. Some experts expect that over half of the cars sold in the U.S. will be EVs by 2030 thanks in part to the IRA’s financial incentives for consumers. As EVs become more affordable to Americans, they are some of the best choices for car buyers for several different reasons.

EVs are cost-effective

EVs are designed to be more cost-efficient than gasoline-powered cars. The relatively simple design of most EVs and lower maintenance requirements result in substantial savings for the owner. Here are specific cost-saving features of EVs:

  • Efficiency of electric drive parts significantly lowers fuel costs.
  • Fuel costs are up to 75% lower than those of traditional vehicles.
  • EVs require much less maintenance compared to gasoline-powered cars.
  • An EV has just 20 moving parts relative to more than 2,000 parts in a conventional vehicle.
  • EVs don’t need a change of oil, transmission fluid, drive belts, fuel filters, or spark plugs.
  • Regenerative braking in EVs leads to less brake wear and tear.
  • EV motor, battery pack, and relevant electronics require no maintenance.
  • EV charging is less expensive than using a traditional car.
  • Unlike gasoline-run cars, you can conveniently charge your EV at home. Lower electricity rates at night can further reduce the cost of EV charging.

EVs are better for the environment than traditional cars

Unlike a traditional car, all-electric vehicles have no fuel tanks or tailpipes. As a result, EVs produce no direct greenhouse gas emissions contributing to pollution and climate change. An EV can save an average of 1.5 million grams of carbon dioxide, the most significant contributor to climate change. Regenerative braking from EVs also reduces brake dust found in traditional cars, which means less pollution from braking. EVs are critical to a more sustainable and cleaner future.

EVs boast Superior performance

EVs accelerate fast and instantly provide maximum torque. Many EVs can move from zero to 60 miles per hour (mph) in about six seconds or less. The location of batteries under the floorboard gives EVs balance and stability. The evenly distributed weight in EVs makes it easy to maneuver, including moving through snow and ice.

EVs give drivers more comfortable ride than traditional car

EVs are known for a more satisfying driving experience than gasoline-powered vehicles. They are quieter due to the absence of engine noise and have effortless acceleration and deceleration. EVs also spend energy more efficiently than their gasoline-powered counterparts. For example, an EV with a 70.0-kilowatt-per-hour (kWh) battery can travel 250 miles compared to 100 miles of an efficient gasoline-powered car running on two gallons of gasoline, equivalent to 70.0 kWh. With historically high gasoline prices at the pump, driving an EV is cheaper.

Due to fewer components, EVs also boast more cabin and storage space than traditional cars. Many EVs have storage spaces under the car’s hood, known as a frunk (front trunk). At the same time, the electric motor and drivetrain in EVs are smaller than those of conventional cars providing more interior and storage space than a gasoline-powered car of equivalent size. Without all the large components, EVs can be expanded and provide more legroom to the driver and passengers.
