What is PECO?

PECO’s origins date back to 1881, when the Brush Electric Light Company of Philadelphia formed to provide electricity to the City of Brotherly Love and surrounding regions. Later known as Philadelphia Electric Company and, eventually, just PECO, it is now the largest transmission and delivery utility in Pennsylvania.

PECO is currently owned by Exelon Corporation, a multibillion-dollar energy company and the largest utility company in the U.S. Based in Philadelphia, PECO provides electricity to roughly 1.7 million customers and natural gas to over 545,000 customers in the greater Philadelphia areas, including Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Montgomery, Philadelphia, and York counties.

PA Power Switch

Pennsylvania is a state with energy choice, which means customers can join the PA Power Switch program. The program went into effect in January 2011 and allows for competition among Pennsylvania energy retailers. Residents and businesses in Pennsylvania now have the ability to switch from their designated utility to any Pennsylvania electric company or natural gas supplier they choose. That means if you live in PECO’s service area, you can choose to buy directly from the utility or another supplier.

Are PECO rates competitive?

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission regulates PECO energy supply, as it does for all public utilities. That does not mean PECO energy supply rates are always higher or lower than other electric generation suppliers. In a deregulated market like Pennsylvania, it’s important to compare your local utility rates with other options from suppliers in your area.

If your local utility doesn’t match your energy wants or needs, you can explore your options and get your electricity and natural gas supply from a provider that does. The free, independent SaveOnEnergy marketplace provides a one-stop shop where you can compare plans and rates to find the best Pennsylvania electric company or natural gas supplier for your needs.

Even if you choose an alternative supplier, it’s important to note that you will remain connected with PECO if that’s your local utility. The utility will continue to deliver electricity and natural gas to your home and handle power outages, even though you purchase energy through a different supplier.

Call PECO to report emergencies

No matter which company you purchase your energy from, your local utility will remain in charge of operating and maintaining all power lines and gas pipelines within the service area. If you experience any emergency, such as a downed power line or a gas leak, be sure to call PECO, not your chosen supplier, to report emergencies.
