Apps to Help You Track Energy Use

Today, there’s an app to track nearly everything, including electricity usage. Gaining oversight into your home’s energy consumption is an influential way to gain control of your energy expenses.

Emporia Energy

The free Emporia Energy app allows users of Emporia’s smart home energy management products to monitor and compare their electricity usage. The Emporia Energy app includes demand and time-of-use management tools. 

For example, once users set a Peak Demand Goal in the app, Emporia automatically adjusts energy usage to achieve that goal. To reduce unnecessary consumption during peak rate hours, the Emporia app automatically limits the energy consumption of certain devices. 

Users can set helpful alerts to better manage their energy usage, such as receiving a notification when an appliance is left turned on. Energy Cost Calculator

The Energy Cost Calculator app is a free electricity usage monitor app that calculates the average home electronics cost of energy. The app requires users to enter data about home electronics, including the device’s power consumption, use per day, period of use, and energy price. The results display your device’s total consumption and total costs.

Nest Mobile

The free Nest Mobile app allows owners of a Nest thermostat to monitor and adjust the temperature in their home from anywhere with a smartphone. The Nest Mobile app reports energy usage and sends alerts about extreme temperatures. Users can also watch the camera footage and receive alerts about smoke and carbon monoxide on their phones. mySunPower

For SunPower consumers who use solar panels to power their homes, there’s the free mySunPower app. 

As it tracks your solar power usage, the mySunPower app also provides information about solar energy production, home energy consumption costs, battery power flows, and system history. The latest update includes real-time reporting and graphs, as well as system status and weather conditions. Find the app in the Apple App Store and Google Play store.

Meter Readings

The Meter Readings app can track up to five meters, such as water, electricity, and green energy sources. The app tracks the utility meters you already have in your home and compiles a consumption data report. Meter Readings will display all the meter data in easy-to-read graphs showing costs per day, week, month, and year. Past readings remain stored in the app to compare recent data with reports from more than a year ago. This electricity usage app costs $0.99 in the App Store.
