AEP Electric in Texas
American Electric Power (AEP) is an electricity provider serving customers in 11 states. AEP Texas is the company’s regional utility, providing energy to communities in Texas such as McAllen, Laredo, Abilene, and Victoria. The utility is headquartered in Corpus Christi. AEP Texas is broken out into AEP Texas Central and AEP Texas North depending on location.
Understand AEP electric service
AEP Texas is a TDSP, or a utility company, which means it delivers electricity but does not sell it. Instead, residents in the AEP Texas area purchase electricity from a retail electric provider (REP). AEP Texas delivers the electricity to the customer’s home or business.
If you do not sign up with an REP, the Public Utilities Commission of Texas (PUCT) will choose a Provider of Last Resort (POLR) for you. Enter your ZIP code to browse rates and plans available in your area and avoid an expensive POLR rate.
The PUCT also sets delivery fees for all TDSPs in Texas. You cannot shop around for utilities and their delivery rates. Everyone in the AEP Texas territory – as well as other Texas utility service areas – pays the delivery rates that the utility and PUCT agree on.
